  1. As I sift through the board, I recall my oath to try to replace what disappeared when we, ahem, opened the basement door & wandered back into the world.

I know that once upon a time I created a topic for completely random, what's up with your day today stuff. Here's its replacement.

Toss a link to your blog or new cover or whatnot in here. Tell me what you ate for breakfast or dinner, (I apparently don't care much for your lunch). What have you been reading? Are you in school? Spill it here, people.

An abandoned board does nothing to attract new members. I'm thinking that's what's going on here. The majority of us - and by "us" I mean those who resided in the basement - keep track of one another through various methods of communication. It's easy for me to brush off the thought of asking Amanda or Kate how their day was by posting here when I can just as easily check their Facebook/Twitter. Same goes for most of you. So let's give it a little effort. Sure, we know what's going on with one another most of the time, & the heavens know we would never truly fall out of touch with what Levi is up to - newbies, if you're reading this, that's legit. No sarcasm - but why don't we get our song reviews back up here? Why don't we branch out a bit & see if we can recruit some new friends to come spend time with us here.

Maybe I'll go so far as to lock myself in the basement for a couple of weeks. That's right. No Facebook, no Twitter, etc. I would have to check my email because I'm now involved in several volunteer opportunities (I get to be a volleyball coach for a team in the Special Olympics! How cool is that?) & I have enrolled in school yet again... but I could walk away from social networking for a few weeks to focus on revitalizing the boards. Could you?

...and since our What's Your Facebook/Twitter ID? thread disappeared, maybe we should start with recreating it here. Anyone feeling comfortable about sharing their info, drop it down below. Thanks!

  2. Hey all!

Thanks Candace, for starting a new thread. I usually check in here about once a day, but move along if I don't see any new activity. Kudos to you for initiating something new!

It's that heinous time of year at work -- financial check-in for the new semester. For the week before classes, and the week after classes start, I see a never-ending parade of bratty kids who think they're entitled to everything they want in this world with no need to work for any of it (or even be polite in an attempt to get it). Granted (and thankfully), that's a small percentage of our students, but I think we all know that an annoying or flat-out ridiculous minority can often overpower the masses with their obnoxious attitudes. The students who truly need help never ask for it (and certainly don't presume to bring their case straight to the top), whereas the most undeserving students circumvent the system and demand special treatment. It's sickening, really, and I have to repeatedly remind myself that this too shall pass.

In better news, I am leaving in the morning for a little weekend getaway, taking a friend down to Wilmington, NC for the grand tour of all things One Tree Hill. It's such a beautiful town, and though I've pretty much seen all the sights before, I know that she will be akin to a kid on Christmas morning, and I plan to enjoy seeing it all again through her excited eyes. There is also a Cheesecake Factory between here and there, so I say, praise the Lord for small favors.

Patty Griffin also has a new album coming out on January 26th, and since I'm listening to her as I type this, I don't mind telling you that I am SO excited to get some new material from her.

Over dinner with some friends last night (at a new bistro downtown that makes DELICIOUS martinis), one of my friends mentioned that she was going to see Tegan and Sara at The National. For a split second, I heard that as "AND The National" and proceeded to freak out. Nevermind the fact that those two acts touring together would be about as crazy as it gets, but I guess that goes to show you how irrational I can get when there's music involved.

Well, I guess that is all for now. I feel like I have a million things to get done before I leave in the morning. Oh, and here's something -- While I'm out of town, my Daddy has my car, putting new brakes on it ($$$), servicing it, and getting it inspected. It stresses me out because it seems that every year at inspection time, they find something wrong with my car that HAS to be fixed, and that will cost me an arm and a leg to fix. I'm blessed b/c I have my Daddy to handle it all for me, but I still have to cough up the dough, and for some reason, when my car is broken, my stress-o-meter goes off the charts. Soooo, I am hoping and praying that nothing is wrong, and that I'll come home to a newly stickered car and not a huge bill. I already told Daddy not to call me while I was away if anything was wrong. I am in desperate need of a few carefree, tranquil days.

  3. Love it, Amanda - thanks for the thanks :)

Luckily my car, dogs & home seem to be in running order. Now if I can just get my body to fall in line, we're good. I decided today that a me with 70 fewer pounds would no doubt be a healthier me, so I'm back to dieting. Blech. On the plus side, the false morning sickness should make it easier to avoid eating. Despite any perceived "tone" in my turn of phrase, I am happy about this. I may not be able to play volleyball with my Special Olympics team (Coumadin + volleyball impact = hospital, again), but I can train with them. I'm giving up caffeine... again... and I'll work through the withdrawal symptoms by reminding myself that I did this once before - while recovering from dying. If I could do it then, I can do it now.

Now for the silly/sad/whatnot truth about the whole deal: I found motivation. I want to cosplay as a character named Mitsuru from "Persona 3" for Anime Banzai 2010. If I'm going to do it & be happy about how it looks, I've got to start growing out my hair (which I cut for Anime Banzai 2009), and losing the extra weight NOW.

Wish me luck or sanity, whichever you think would be best.

REQUEST: Your 10 favorite songs from the "Top 25 Most Played" songs folder in your iTunes. Go! List 'em below. I refuse to post mine until someone else posts (yes, Amanda, you can be that someone).

Ok ok i will be the first with the request:

Levi Weaver (of course he had to be in my 25 most played) - I am certain i am a train
South Cry - Whatever you try
    Mazzy Star - Into Dust
Neverending White Lights - A Littlepiece
    Jeff Buckley - So Real
    Space - When Clouds Align
The Airborne Toxic Event - Sometime around midnight
    Bloc Party - Blue Light
Imogen Heap - Hide and Seek
    Candlebox - Breathe me in

Seriously have no idea why Tom McRae - Mermaid Blues is not on the list as i play it nearly everyday, i love it! Personally i think my list is messed up as some of the tracks i've listed i haven't listened to for what seems like ages.

Oh and me around the world...

  5. AHHHH! Amanda Palmer & Neil Gaiman are getting married! Did everyone else read that? Happy evening :)

    Alright, here are my 10:

    1) "Boulevard of Broken Songs" - Party Ben

    2) "You Know My Name" - Chris Cornell (theme from "Casino Royale" - I love me some James Bond)

    3) "Crash" - Matt Willis

    4) "Headlock" - Imogen Heap (Yes, it still saves me daily)

    5) "Dead Best Friends" - our team captain, Levi (If the play counter on this also included what I play in my car, "Sick, or Determined?" would have been on the very top of this list... which, btw, is in the order they show up, top to bottom, on the iTunes list)

    6) "Fell in Love with a Girl" - The White Stripes

    7) "Boondocks theme" - Asheru (If you haven't heard this, find it now & listen to the lyrics!)

    8) "The Walk" - Imogen Heap

    9) "Precious Things (Remix)" - Vitamin String Quartet (originally by Tori Amos)

    10) "Rolling Star" - Yui (love the guitar in this. I like to pretend I know Japanese when I listen to it)

My list is more bare-bones than I had thought it would be. The top 3 tracks (not listed here) are songs I used for a RPG I GM'd (Serenity, not D&D)... wow. I think the geekometer just broke. Oops. My bad. I swear, at some point in the future, I will be cool again. Might not be some point in the *near* future, though.

  6. Topic is a day old? Forget that. Onward!

    REQUESTS:
    1) Post your 10 from above request if you haven't yet
    2) Post 3 songs you like that you don't think anyone outside of your immediate circle of friends/family would think that you would enjoy.
    3) I want to know your current hair color.

Again, I will not post my answers until someone else does.

    Hmm tricky question...

My mum was very surprised that i like Mumford and Sons - Winter Winds so that would be one.

    2 others then...

Devotchka - How It Ends and Chris Isaac - Wicked Game

Oh and my hair colour is a dull, boring brown colour.

  8. 1) Post your 10 from above request if you haven't yet

    - I recently (accidentally, though this will surprise no one, given my erasure of the previous board here) reset my play counts. It's kind of like when your phone loses all 400+ of its contacts, and 6 months later, you realize that you only talked to about 200 of them anyway. I will say that I have really fallen in love lately with the music of Damien Jurado and Astronautalis.

    2) Post 3 songs you like that you don't think anyone outside of your immediate circle of friends/family would think that you would enjoy.

this is going to surprise you, i'd bet.

    a. That stupid Ke$ha song. I could give you at LEAST 10 reasons why I should hate it, but my external xm radio fuse blew in the car and i let it go for a week before fixing it... in my week of listening to terrestrial radio, i heard this song about 5 times and didn't change the channel.

    b. probably 2/3 of the latest album by Common

    c. Sex on Fire by Kings of Leon.

    I know. I know.

    3) I want to know your current hair color.

boring brown. i think it's about to go back to black, though.

  9. Excellent.

What a weekend. Ran 2 miles Sunday, 3 yesterday, and another 2 already today before I went to school. Fitness officially hurts.

    3 Songs You Wouldn't Know I Like:
"Two Princes" and "How Could You Want Him (When You Know You Could Have Me?)" by the Spin Doctors. Love those songs. I do a pretty excellent ballad cover of Two Princes. If I knew how to be and stay ashamed for any measurable amount of time, this next song would no doubt cause me great shame. "See You Again" by... Miley Cyrus. I could use the excuse that I was a PTA President for a year and that I listened to a lot of Miley's stuff while working around the school... but that honestly has nothing to do with it. I simply find it enjoyable. I should also note that I will listen to *anything* tied to Muppets or Alvin & the Chipmunks. Kermit the Frog's rendition of "You Drive Me Crazy" amuses me to no end.

Levi & anyone else who follows baseball: Top 5 teams right this second. Don't think, just type.

  10. Aaaahhh! I've been out of town, so I'm feeling way behind, but I'm all for answering questions, so:

    1) Post your 10 favorite songs from your 25 most played folder:

I actually don't have a 25 Most Played folder that would be relevant, b/c I NEVER listen to music on my actual computer. I load it onto my iPod and go from there. But I do have a playlist on my iPod that I routinely update with songs that I can't stop listening to, which is sort of a "Most Played." The only catch is that it's less a list of my favorite songs ever, and more of a list of my favorite songs recently. Also of note is that Levi has his own playlist on my iPod, along with Ryan Adams, Derek Webb, Josh Ritter, Patty Griffin, and other artists of that ilk that I LOVE. So, when I want to listen to them, I go to those playlists, making them absent from this one. That being said, my 10 are:

    Ambulance - Eisley
    Brooklyn - Wakey!Wakey!
    Fake Empire - The National
    Falling - The Civil Wars
Far More - The Honorary Title
Have Love Will Travel - The Black Keys
Love You Now - Madi Diaz
Somebody to Love - The Glee version (of the Queen song)
The Moon is Down - John Prine
Tell Me What It Takes - Lucero

    2) Post 3 songs you like that you don't think anyone outside of your immediate circle of friends/family would think that you would enjoy.

That is a hard one to answer, because just looking at that list I just posted, I've got John Prine up there with The Black Keys and Glee. The rest of it does toe a certain line of musical taste, I suppose, but my playlists definitely have multiple personality disorders. I love the Backstreet Boys. And Joe Nichols. And Damien Rice. So just a wacky group. I guess I will list three songs that I shyly admit to enjoying under the right circumstances:

Disco Inferno - 50 Cent (I realize how ridiculous it is. Truly, I do. But I hear this song and I do what I'm told -- shake it all over the place.)

Holiday - Doktor Kosmos (Only my fellow OTH-ers will get that. I assume no one else has ever even heard of the song, which is certainly how it should be. If it comes up on shuffle when I have other people in the car, I definitely get those WTF looks from anybody who does not get the OTH connection. It may possibly be the most ridiculous song I have ever heard in my life, but when I hear it, it immediately makes me smile and I turn it up and sing along: "Holiday. It's the best day. Ice Cream Day. I am only happy when I have a holiday holiday holiday holiday holiday....")

Made to Love - TobyMac (I loved DC Talk back in the day, but certainly didn't follow that through to the "TobyMac" era, and I just can't handle the vast majority of contemporary Christian music. However, I took a Zumba class -- which is freaking FUN if you have never tried it -- to support a missions organization, and this was one of the non-Zumba songs we danced to, so it got stuck in my head. Add to that the fact that hearing it triggers my desire to dance around, and that explains why I do get some enjoyment out of this song.)

    3) I want to know your current hair color:

Red. Like....auburn, I guess. The usual color -- i.e. the same one as in my little avatar thing. And my Elmo picture from Twitter is what it looks like in the sunlight ;)

    Posted 7 months ago #
  11. Awesome, Amanda - love that you've got the red head thing going. I've got an almost black brown hue right now with bright pink highlights (they look dark unless I'm outside).

    I. am. officially. spent. Spent 4 miles on the dreadmill today, did 40 calf raises, 20 squats... and then got an email from the aerial dance teacher I contacted saying that if I want to take the class before Sakura, I have to start... wait for it... tonight.
So after homework, shopping, and my little trip to the bank today, I'm taking a nap. Here's hoping I don't break my neck or get impaled on anything. *

  12. Texas Rangers
    Boston Red Sox
    Los Angeles Dodgers
    Chicago Cubs
    Florida Marlins

So now that the 'Boys are out, who's winning the Super Bowl?

    j-e-t-s jets jets jets?

    Posted 7 months ago #
  13. With the Cowboys out, my interest in the Super Bowl decreased DRAMATICALLY. I will be rooting for either the Jets or the Colts, depending on who makes it, over the Saints or the Vikings. I *guess* I want to Colts to go, but it's mainly a sympathy vote to several of my hard-core Colts-fan friends. I say all that with the understanding that I really do not care about football anymore except on that one day a year, when culture mandates that I go to a Super Bowl party, and if I get in the vicinity of a sporting event on TV, I invariably get sucked in.

One exception to that rule is baseball, which I find SO boring. I can barely get interested in that if I am sitting in front of a live game. If I have to have a favorite team, then I do own a Cleveland Indians shirt.

When we get ready to talk basketball, put me down for the Bobcats :)

  15. hahaa @Amanda for that Bobcats thing. haha.

I also never listen to my itunes on my computer... and my Ipod is dead, so i'll have to come back to that top 10 question.

uh 3 songs most people wouldn't know i liked are 2/3 country. Because I claimed to hate country. But I actually really like a lot of it. I just have to be in the mood to listen to it.
    1. She's in love with the boy-Tricia Yearwood
    2. Jolene-Dolly Parton

uhhhhh. i'll think of a third one and post it when I have more time.

My hair color is Brown. Boring Boring brown. But I finally got it cut after 2 years recently. In June of 2007 I shaved my head and donated all of my hair through the shear Hope organization(www.shearhope.org). Didn't touch it for 2 years and it was back out to about the same length(30 inches or 2.5 feet.) But my Christmas present from one of my roommates was that he took me to his stylist for a haircut.

and even though I love to watch baseball... I do not have a favorite team or anything because I don't watch it on tv. I mostly go around to local games and whatnot... Or go see my brothers team.

  16. Yes, I feel bad that I now keep track of all the old basementers on Facebook and twitter and don't stop by here nearly as often as I used to. I have a reason, albeit a lame one. This is the only computer with the password saved on it and it broke. I COULD go retrieve a new one and such every time, but it's such a hassle especially since I don't know what to contribute much anymore, hehe. I'll try harder.

I change my hair color monthly. That's why all my pics always look different. :) I feel in my soul I'm a red head though and have been for awhile, though for awhile it was black with red streaks, inspired by Nikki Sixx. This was sometime after seeing Cruefest two summers ago hehe. It's been purple, brown, and even blond for 3 weeks. I'm sticking with the current color for now, I like it. (Levi the black would look hot.)

I have nothing to contribute to the sports really. Sorries! :)

Music- Always music with me. Such passion! I have to say it's hard to pick 3 songs nobody outside my family would think I'd like it'd be

a- E.S Posthumous - Nara. It's a great ambient song that they used in commercials for movies on occasion. You've probably heard it even if you think you haven't. Really beautiful! Most people know me as a rock chick. This is anything but.

b- Carrie Underwood - Cowboy Cassanova. Ok, I don't like country generally speaking. What's worse is crossover. But there is something undeniably catchy about this song. I'm surprised I like it. :) But I do. I like it a lot.

c- Lady Gaga - Love Game. Everybody who knows me knows that I am a stickler for lyrics. These are some of the worst written. Really, really bad. But... Undeniably catchy again. The music saves the song...

    Life-

Life is going well. My boyfriend and I are happy and I'm moving into Seattle to be closer to him. Music is in a standstill with the current band though. I'm thinking of starting a second project, I don't write metal as often as I write normal piano things, and it would be good to do pop maybe...

Did anyone else hear about Russell Brand and Katy Perry's engagement? They met at the VMAs. That was fast! (Speaking of another lack luster lyricist, but congrats! I hope they are super happy!) Congrats to Amanda and Neil too!

I still haven't learned to cook. C'est La Vie.

    Posted 7 months ago #
  17. Oh, Steph, you know you love the Bobcats *almost* as much as I do. I am gonna get myself some merchandise.

Also, Jolene is a great song. There are many country songs that I will always love, even if they don't fit in with the rest of what I like anymore. I grew up on those songs, and there's just a homey feeling that goes with hearing them. The first poster that went up in my room during my pre-teen years was one of Garth Brooks. I loved him for "Shameless" and I continued to love him even after everyone else jumped on the bandwagon. I probably still have the poster in my closet, rolled up with a bunch of Jeff Gordon and Backstreet Boys posters. Go ahead and laugh. See if I care.

    Posted 7 months ago #
  18. @Kate: We should try to get together for lunch or dinner while Abe & I are in Seattle. We'll be staying at the Sheraton across the street from the convention center.

I love that Katy Perry is getting married.

And I love that you know Nara! Hardly anyone recognizes that wonderful song.

Oh, and I apparently was not impaled upon anything, though I did fall from the silk trapeze. The bar trapeze was much easier.

    Posted 7 months ago #
  19. Far be it from me to ever even attempt anything that involves a trapeze. Kudos to you, lady!

  20. I thought that Russell and Katy met at the VMA's the first time Russell hosted. Not this last time but maybe I'm wrong. I find Russell hilarious, and have recently heard rumors of a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie with Russell playing the part of Captain Jack Sparrow's brother which I think would be absolutely amazing! However I still laugh everytime I think about Katy Perry. My sister saw her when she was performing Christian Contemporary under the name Katy Hudson so I laugh that she had to change her last name and sing about something as ridiculously juvenile as kissing another girl and liking it to become famous. I'll admit her songs are catchy. but boo.

The first poster I ever hung in my room is of the Original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. and it is still hanging in that room to this day. It's in the room that is now my mothers. haha. Someday soon i'm going to buy a frame and move it to my room. I have a ridiculous amount of knowledge on the Power Rangers front. My text message tone is the comunicator beep and my ring tone is the theme song. Don't judge. But only the ORIGINAL MMPR. The rest can suck it.
