  1. okay, so before the basement we had a film thread so I decided to start a new one.

I've had the worst luck lately with movies. nothing i've watched lately has really impressed me except for The Time Traveler's Wife. Everything else has been rather lack luster.

What about you guys. Have you seen any really amazing films lately? be it in theaters or on dvd. New or old? I'm always looking for something new to love.....

  2. Hmms. Last movie I saw in the theater and really liked was "Milk." Saw "Bruno" a couple months ago. It was ok, but lots of raunchy humor and if it's not your thing I wouldn't recommend it.

That's new, old classics never die. Do you have twitter? I'm not sure I'm following you!

Since Maddox was born my wife and I have seen very few movies. My parents love to watch him and he likes hanging out with them so the weekend before last Angie and I went and saw 3 movies. The theater in Cluburne has 2.50 matinees and 4.50 regular showings. That is way better than the 11 dollars I paid for 1 matinee ticket and an icee at the Premier in Burleson.
We watched Harry Potter. Thought it was great. GI Joe. It was what it was, I wasn't expecting much so I was pleased. And District 9 which I thought was very inventive.
I've seen inglourious basterds twice. I thought it was great. Brad Pitt's accent is hillarious and I laughed almost every time he was on screen.
I have been wanting to see 500 Days of Summer it looks good.
Angie and I watched an oldy but goody last night, Snatch. She hadn't seen it before and she said she liked it.

  8. see. I think i need to watch harry Potter again. Because I went to see it on midnight the night it came out and I thought it was boring. I actually slept through half the movie. So maybe I need to see it now when i'm not expecting amazing-ness and when there are less people to annoy me.

I can not wait to see Inglorious basterds. I wanted to see it last weekend but I'm broke until tomorrow. so most likely I'll see it tomorrow night.

  10. i'm gonna find a theatre somewhere in st. louis and watch 'where the wild things are' before the show.

  11. yeah. i can't wait. Dannell is either going to have to come here or i'll have to go to San Antonio.

  12. I refuse to see that "Inglorious Basterds" movie until they learn how to spell. Annoying.

DEFINITELY want to see "Where the Wild Things Are."

Loved Harry Potter. The sixth book was one of my favorites (I love Snape), and hence I was excited he was FINALLY given prominence in the sixth movie. It is MUCH easier for me to enjoy the movies the further away I get from reading the books. I won't let myself re-read the books until the movies are done, because then I just get angry about all that they're leaving out. For example, when I went to the marathon before HP6 and rewatched all the movies, I thought "Goblet of Fire" was probably the most entertaining of the films. However, the first time I saw it, I had read the book much more recently, and as we all know (who read AND watched), the 4th movie botched up SO. MUCH. IMPORTANT. PLOT. INFORMATION.

Also, I wish they wouldn't divide up book 7 into two movies -- I'd totally sit in the theater for one great epic film.

  13. haha. see I think the misspelling is funny. That's part of the reason I do want to see it. I'm always very hit or miss with Tarantino. I alwaysenjoy the plot line of his films. But he is just such a fan of dialogue that I tend to get bored/distracted. Like everyone I know liked Death Proof more than Planet Terror in the Grindhouse movies but I'm the opposite because there is just soooooooo much talking and not really anything else. even when the action is taking place, the characters are still talking up a storm.

and i don't think my butt could sit through a 5 hour Harry Potter Film. Less they went back to the old days and gave intermissions at the theater so that I could get up and move around. the 3+ hours for grindhouse was bad enough.

  14. I know what you mean. I just hope it doesn't chop up the action too much, or lose the build of intensity inherent in the book.

I'm glad to see that I am not the only Snape fan. Actually, I'm an Alan Rickman fan.
@maliciousintent2205 - there is quite a bit of talking. And there is a lot of reading. The actors speak German and French and you have to read subtitles. Still sooooo worth it. And I agree I would have to have an intermission on a long movie, but I would watch one long HP movie.

  16. @louis *Ahem* http://img187.yfrog.com/img187/993/pvu.jpg

Snape is awesome. Alan Rickman is pretty great, too, but I loved Snape in the books. It took me a while to accept Alan Rickman as Snape, but in actuality, that was going to be the case with anyone they put in the role, because they would never be the Snape that existed in my head. But Alan Rickman does a fantastic job in the role, and I cannot wait to see what he does in the next two films!

@Amanda - I will never have the freedom to read the books and visualize Snape (or anyone else for that matter) as a new character. The movies have ruined me. I read Fight Club after I saw the movie and all I could see was Ed Norton, Brad Pitt and Helena Bonham-Carter in my head.

  18. @louis Hence why you're supposed to read the books first!!!

In fact, I didn't start reading them until right before book 7 came out (thankfully, because I would never have been able to stand waiting in between them), and I refused to watch any of the movies until I had finished reading all the books.

  19. @amanda..... oh man. that picture made me laugh out loud. haha. so hilarious. See I adore Alan Rickman. So I love him as snape. And while I enjoy Snape, I came to love the character through fan fiction.... and therefore it's not really snape. it's someone elses opinion on him. soooooo. But yeah. Alan Rickman. It made my day when I found out he was going to be in Perfume. which is in my top 5 favorite books.

@louis..... Subtitles don't bother me at all. Quite a lot of my favorite films are French films so I have no problem reading the movie. haha.
